For the student of contemporary dance, Interlochen's program is a wonderful opportunity to grow as both a technician and as an artist. During your three or six weeks here, you will find an environment that is challenging, focused, and supportive. Limited class sizes ensure that you will receive individual attention from our faculty of professional dance educators.
The contemporary dance program is a very focused experience. Dancers train for six hours a day, and may choose to attend for three or six weeks. The curriculum includes:
- Modern technique
- Ballet technique
- Improvisation and composition
- Body conditioning
Each class features live musicians, and classes are held in the beautiful lakeside Hildegarde Lewis Dance Building (view 360-degree virtual tour).
At the end of each three week session, you will participate in a public performance of repertory pieces. Instructors restage choreography or create original works in a variety of styles to showcase the students. Additional performance opportunities are available by audition or selection. Performance venues include Corson Auditorium, Kresge Auditorium, the Interlochen Bowl, and the Upton-Morley Pavilion.
While dance students do not participate in elective classes outside the dance curriculum, you will have many opportunities to enjoy presentations in music, theatre, visual art, creative writing, and film.
