High School Contemporary Dance Summer Program

For the student of contemporary dance, Interlochen's program is a wonderful opportunity to grow as both a technician and as an artist. During your three or six weeks here, you will find an environment that is challenging, focused, and supportive. Limited class sizes ensure that you will receive individual attention from our faculty of professional dance educators.

Program length: 3 weeks
Program dates:
June 27, 2020 to July 18, 2020
July 19, 2020 to August 9, 2020
Tuition: $6,100
Age range: Students currently in grades 9-12

The contemporary dance program is a very focused experience. Dancers train for six hours a day, and may choose to attend for three or six weeks. The curriculum includes:

  • Modern technique
  • Ballet technique
  • Improvisation and composition
  • Jazz
  • Body conditioning
  • Repertory

At the end of each three week session, you will participate in a public performance of repertory pieces. Instructors restage choreography or create original works in a variety of styles to showcase the students. Additional performance opportunities are available by audition or selection. Performance venues include Corson Auditorium, Kresge Auditorium, the Interlochen Bowl, and the Upton-Morley Pavilion.

While dance students do not participate in elective classes outside the dance curriculum, you will have many opportunities to enjoy presentations in music, theatre, visual art, creative writing, and film.

Prerequisites

Students should have had at least three years of training, and be injury-free prior to arrival. Any health-related concern should be acknowledged on the medial form and reported to the dance department prior to arrival.

Dancers are expected to maintain a body weight that is proportionate to their height and bone structure. Students are expected to be well-groomed; long hair must be worn up and off the neck.
