During the viola institute, you will experience an intensive week of orchestral, solo, and technique master classes with an outstanding artist faculty. You will have the opportunity to play with the institute's viola ensemble, attend viola master classes, and perform in a student recital.
Below is some of the faculty from 2015. 2016 faculty will be announced soon.
The viola institute is an intensive experience, designed for motivated violists in grades 9-12. Each day, you'll have lectures, master classes, ensemble rehearsal, and other scheduled activities. With a focus on orchestral and solo repertoire, this program is ideal for students who may go on to study viola at the college or conservatory level.
Each summer, the viola institute faculty includes performers and educators from major symphony orchestras, colleges, and Interlochen Arts Academy.
Orchestral Master Class
Students will have the opportunity to perform required audition excerpts in the orchestral master class presented by Lynn Ramsey, viola instructor at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
Please submit a video recording of the following:
- one movement from a standard viola concerto, sonata, or equivalent work
- two movements of contrasting movements from one of Bach's unaccompanied Cello Suites
Students are welcome to attend this one-week institute, and then continue on in the six-week orchestra summer program or the six-week advanced string quartet program, both of which immediately follow the institute (a separate audition is required).
Interlochen is also home to the Arts Academy boarding high school, which offers a viola performance major for grades 9-12, as well as a post-graduate year.
