Interlochen Arts Camp is pleased to announce the conductors and concertmasters for the 2021 World Youth Symphony Orchestra, Interlochen Philharmonic, World Youth Wind Symphony, and Interlochen Wind Ensemble.
The Camp’s flagship ensemble, the World Youth Symphony Orchestra, will be led by six acclaimed conductors. The Grammy Award-winning music director of the Orchestre Nationale de France, Cristian Măcelaru will serve for the second consecutive year as the World Youth Symphony Orchestra’s artistic director and principal conductor. The guest conductors and their performance dates are:
- July 4: Cristian Măcelaru
- July 11: Larry Rachleff
- July 18: Christian Reif
- July 25: JoAnn Falletta
- Aug. 1: Gemma New
- Aug. 8: Jung-Ho Pak
Students in the World Youth Symphony Orchestra will also collaborate closely with six Valade Concertmasters. These exceptional violinists serve as mentors to the orchestra’s members, providing insight on bowings, interpretation, professional rehearsal etiquette, and more during the ensemble’s daily rehearsals. The six concertmasters are:
- June 26 - July 11: Timothy Lees and Dennis Kim
- July 12 - July 25: Martin Chalifour and Margaret Batjer
- July 26 - Aug. 8: Celeste Golden-Boyer and Jeff Thayer
The Interlochen Philharmonic will be led by three distinguished conductors, each serving a two-week term and leading two performances. The schedule for summer 2021 is as follows:
- July 4 and 11: Octavo Más-Arocas
- July 18 and 25: Chelsea Tipton
- Aug. 1 and 8: Carolyn Watson
Steven D. Davis, director of bands and wind ensembles at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, will reprise his role as the Camp’s coordinator of wind ensembles, providing artistic guidance for both the World Youth Wind Symphony and Interlochen Wind Ensemble. The World Youth Wind Symphony’s 2021 conductors are:
- July 3: Damon Talley
- July 10: Steven D. Davis
- July 17: Caroline Beatty
- July 24: Sarah McKoin
- July 31: Steve Peterson
- Aug. 7: Steven D. Davis
Davis will also conduct the Interlochen Wind Ensemble during the fourth week of Camp. The ensemble’s full roster of conductors includes:

Repertoire for the 2021 ensembles will be announced at a later date.
