Advanced Bassoon Intensive for High School Students

The Advanced Bassoon Intensive is an outstanding summer program for experienced young players. You will spend a week of concentrated study with a distinguished faculty of performers and educators and receive personalized instruction as well as the opportunity to perform in master classes.

The goal of the Advanced Bassoon Intensive is to prepare you for further study at the college or conservatory level. All master classes and clinics will address advanced performing techniques, and will include repertoire you have prepared in advance (a pianist will be provided for accompanied repertoire). Students will also study orchestral excerpts and solo pieces.

Master classes include:

  • Concerto repertoire
  • Sonata repertoire
  • Milde concert studies

In addition, you will participate in the large bassoon ensemble and have practice time and ensemble rehearsals. You will also attend inspiring performances presented by our accomplished faculty.

You will also learn:

  • How to get the most out of your practice time
  • How to improve your reed scraping technique
  • The art of tone production
  • How to cope with performance anxiety
  • About the college audition process
  • Contrabassoon

 

Audition Requirements

Please submit video recordings of the following:

  • Weber – Concerto in F Movement 1 exposition
  • Milde – Concert Study No. 29
  • Ravel – Bolero

Applicants to the Advanced Bassoon Intensive who are not accepted will be considered for the Bassoon Intensive.

Additional Opportunities

Students interested in a multi-week, ensemble-based program are invited to also apply to the high school Orchestra & Wind Ensemble program, which begins immediately after this one-week intensive.

Interlochen is also home to the Arts Academy boarding high school, which offers a Bassoon Performance major for students in grades 9-12, as well as a post-graduate year.
