What You'll Learn

This hyper-focused jazz piano intensive on is designed to help you hone your skills, while studying under the encouraging tutelage of our accomplished faculty members and guest artists.

As a student of the Jazz Piano Intensive, you will:

  • Develop musicianship and build technique
  • Synthesize and apply understanding of harmonic and stylistic practices
  • Demonstrate effective rehearsal and individual practice techniques
  • Synthesize and apply aesthetic, communication, and organizational skills that are vital to successful performers
  • Investigate the art and science of musical innovation

Master Classes

During this intensive, you will have the opportunity to attend daily master classes with the world's leading jazz pianists and practitioners. These incredible artists will help you hone your skills while offering helpful, real-world perspectives on life as a working jazz musician.

Performance Opportunities

Jazz pianists will have several opportunities to perform in or attend student recitals. Performance venues include the 3,900-seat Kresge Auditorium, the 950-seat Corson Auditorium, the open-air historic Interlochen Bowl, and the beautiful Dendrinos Chapel and Recital Hall. Kresge Auditorium was recently named one of the ten best outdoor performance venues in the nation by USA Today.

Additional Opportunities

Pianists who are interested in continuing their summer focused on jazz study are encouraged to apply to the three-week high school Jazz Performance & Improvisation program, which immediately follows this intensive. Interlochen is also home to the Arts Academy boarding high school, which offers six music programs for grades 9-12.
