Steven D. Davis has inspired ensembles around the world. In constant demand as a guest conductor, 2019–20 will take him to Carnegie Hall, Wiener Musikverein, All-State ensembles in Texas, Virginia, Louisiana, and West Virginia. He has been invited to conduct and/or share international residencies in Bangkok, Beijing, Dublin, Lisbon, Melbourne, Salzburg, Sydney, and Vienna, and has been a guest conductor, artist, and clinician in many of the leading conservatories and collegiate music programs, including the Eastman School of Music, Northwestern University, Louisiana State University, the University of Georgia, Florida State University, the University of Illinois, Ithaca College, Michigan State University, University of Texas at Austin, the University of Colorado, Boulder, Columbus State, the Central Conservatory in Beijing, and the Lisbon Conservatory, among countless others.
He is celebrated as a conductor of wind ensembles, orchestras, opera, ballet, and cutting-edge new music ensembles. In addition to conducting standard symphonic repertoire of significant composers, Davis is fervently committed to performing diverse new repertoire, winning praise from prominent contemporary composers including Robert Beaser, Chen Yi, John Corigliano, Michael Daugherty, Roshanne Etezady, Osvaldo Golijov, Stephen Hartke, Jennifer Higdon, James Mobberley, Narong Prangcharoen, Bernard Rands, Paul Rudy, Steven Stucky, Frank Ticheli, and Zhou Long.
Davis is proudly dedicated to music education. In addition to numerous guest appearances at All-State and honor performance ensembles around the United States and abroad, he spends his summers conducting at the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp. During the school year, he leads the Symphony Orchestra of the Youth Symphony of Kansas City, which, under his leadership, have enjoyed performances at the Midwest Clinic, and at both Missouri and Kansas music education conferences. Additionally, the orchestra has collaborated with numerous soloists and composers. He has been an invited presenter at many music education conferences, including the Midwest Clinic, CBDNA, TMEA, among others. He founded and hosts the Kansas City Conducting Symposium every summer at the UMKC Conservatory.
Davis currently serves as the Rose Ann Carr Millsap Missouri Distinguished Professor of Music and Professor of Conducting at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory. Davis is an elected or honorary member in several national music organizations. His wife, Michelle, is the love of his life, and is the Director of Orchestras at Liberty High School in Liberty, Missouri. He also adores his two dogs: Henrik Roos (Henri), and Thomas.
