Announcing summer 2017 conductors and Valade Concertmasters

Interlochen Arts Camp has announced the lineup of conductors and concertmasters who will work with students in the World Youth Symphony Orchestra program in the summer of 2017.

This season’s concertmasters and conductors are the continuation of a decades-long tradition of bringing world-class artists to teach students at Interlochen Arts Camp. The Valade Concertmaster Program was launched in 2016 to further enhance the experiences of young musicians. The concertmasters sit in on each WYSO rehearsal, offering advice and experience to both the conductor and the students.

The 2017 Valade Concertmasters are:

  • Week 1: Margaret Batjer
  • Week 2: Martin Chalifour
  • Week 3: Dennis Kim
  • Week 4: Celeste Golden Boyer
  • Week 5: Nathan Olson
  • Week 6: Jeff Thayer

The concertmasters will join with the following conductors:

  • Week 1: Karina Canellikis
  • Week 2: JoAnn Falletta
  • Week 3: Carlos Kalmar
  • Week 4: Cristian Macelaru
  • Week 5: Carlos Izcaray
  • Week 6: Jung-Ho Pak

“Our concertmaster program has allowed us to bring in the best concertmasters in the country to work with the students not just in one masterclass for a few hours in one day, but over an entire week,” said Eric Stomberg, the associate director of music for Camp programs. “The product that the students create at the end is simply astonishing.”
