The College Counseling and Test Preparation Institute is a one-week program that will help students start the process of preparing for the SAT or TOEFL. It will also provide practical information and background for students who are researching conservatories and college arts programs. This program is ideal for students already planning to attend Interlochen Arts Camp who would not otherwise have time to take a test preparation course.
Test Preparation – Even for those students who are planning to major in the fine arts, standardized tests can be a factor in college admissions and scholarship awards. This institute has two tracks. The SAT track will provide test preparation designed to improve reading, writing and math skills along with test-taking strategies needed for success on the SAT. (While this is an SAT-focused course, skills learned will be highly applicable to ACT testing as well.) The TOEFL track will work with non-native English speakers in the four tested areas: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Students will gauge their progress through two practice tests and develop a testing plan with the help of a counselor from Interlochen Arts Academy. Participants will leave the program with a detailed study plan and a customized online test prep course including online questions and instant feedback, that they can review right up until test day.
College Counseling – Institute participants will also have the opportunity to work with college counselors who specialize in assisting students who are applying to conservatories and college arts programs. Their guidance will include information about audition procedures, portfolio submission, letters of recommendation, essay development, and the nuts and bolts of application submission. Students will leave with a plan that will help focus their college search and improve their college applications.
