The junior band program provides a beginning ensemble experience for students in grades 3-6. Students participate in group rehearsals and sectionals with teachers who specialize in working with young musicians. Instruction will emphasize basic ensemble skills as well as individual instrumental pedagogy. Repertoire will be chosen with sensitivity to the needs of the individual students and the full group. Students will participate in a Junior Band performance at the end of each two-week session and will have an opportunity to join the Intermediate Wind Symphony during a rehearsal.
With a curriculum geared for success, positive experiences are provided in which participants at all skill levels gain a sense of accomplishment. All ensembles perform one concert in each two-week session. Students participate in the following:
Two hour rehearsals in full group and like-instrument sectionals emphasize fundamentals that will facilitate the growth and continued success of young musicians. View repertoire.
Musicianship elective develops an understanding of written music (in treble and bass clefs), rhythm, meter and scales.
Chorus is required to develop aural skills.
One additional elective (see elective options)
Due to the two-week length of the junior music programs, private lessons are not offered to students who are attending only one session. Private lessons are available for an additional fee to any junior student who is attending camp for at least four weeks.
How to Apply
Students can apply online (strongly encouraged) or by mail. This program enrolls on a first-come, first-served basis, so early application is advised.
Additional Opportunities
Interlochen offers an honors recital competition for the Junior division. Winners will perform in a special honors recital at the end of each two-week session. An audition is required, and is due by May 10, 2013. Honors recital competition details >>
