Singer-Songwriter Summer Program for Grades 6-8

Why Take Singer-Songwriter

From Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen to Lizzo and Taylor Swift, singer-songwriters are the voice of their generation. Performing your own work is one of the deepest forms of artistic expression. While at Interlochen, you'll master the fundamentals. Our faculty help you explore the crossroads of emotion, imagination, and song.

What You'll Learn

In this program, you will work with our expert faculty to deepen your understanding of lyric writing, melodic expression, and accompaniment. Through small classes and one-on-one lessons, you will better your instrumental and vocal skills, performance execution, and learn about varying styles.

Program Highlights

Collaboration

Collaboration is a unique component of our summer program. Songwriting students will have an opportunity to collaborate with the Music Production & Engineering students learning about production and topline.

Additional Opportunities

Singer-songwriters who are interested in additional Interlochen Arts Camp music programming are encouraged to review the intermediate Music Production & Engineering, Jazz Performance & Improvisation, and Popular Music Performance programs.

Interlochen is also home to the Arts Academy boarding high school, which offers six music programs for grades 9-12.

Performance Opportunities

Your time in this program will provide you with multiple performance opportunities in:

  • Closed student workshops
  • Coffee-house style events on campus
  • Mid-session open performances
  • End of session concerts

The experiences I've gained at Interlochen have not only changed me as a person, but have changed me as an artist. Playing live shows with friends, working with people from all over the world, and receiving educated feedback have matured me as a songwriter. I wouldn't be the artist I am today without Interlochen.
