High School Singer-Songwriter Summer Program

The two-week singer-songwriter summer program is an opportunity for students to hone their skills as songwriters and performers, under the direction of professional performing songwriters and other musicians. Students will explore a variety of songwriting styles and will have ample performance opportunities, including informal "coffee house" style events and a concert performance. A variety of songwriting styles will be explored and musical collaboration is encouraged.

Age range: Grades 9-12

Students in the singer-songwriter program will create new works and develop performance skills on piano, guitar and voice.

Under the guidance of faculty, students will compose songs and share them in small workshop groups of eight or nine students. The workshops will allow singer-songwriters to gain performing experience and receive feedback for their work in an intimate and supportive environment.

Class time will focus on song fundamentals and the connection between emotion, imagination and self-expression.

Additional Opportunities

Interlochen is also home to the Arts Academy boarding high school, which also offers a singer-songwriter major for students in grades 9-12, as well as a post-graduate year.
