If you are a serious student pianist with collegiate and professional aspirations, the piano institute is an excellent opportunity to spend a week in master classes with renowned guest artists. You'll also have private lessons with Interlochen's piano faculty members, Dr. T.J. Lymenstull and Dr. Michael Coonrod.
During your time here, you will participate in master classes and attend inspiring faculty and guest artist performances. You'll also have classes in historic performance styles, piano technique, memorization, and movement with music. Performance opportunities include student recitals and a possible invitation to perform live on Interlochen Public Radio.
Additionally, up to eight students will have the opportunity to play a concerto with an orchestra and be coached. Concerti options include:
- Bach: Concerto in D minor
- Bach: Concerto in F minor
- Mozart: Concerto in A Major, K. 414
If you wish to be considered for this special opportunity, please include a movement from one of these concerti with your audition recording.
Audio or video file containing three works:
- A substantial work of the student's choice. Example: Prelude & fugue, suite, ballade, scherzo, etc.
- Any etude by Chopin, Moszkowski, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, or Debussy.
- A movement from a sonata by Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven.
Students who wish to be considered for the concerto reading should include a movement from one of the concerti in lieu of the sonata.
Students are welcome to attend this one-week institute, and the continue on in the six-week piano summer program that immediately follows.
Interlochen is also home to the Arts Academy boarding high school, which offers a piano performance major for grades 9-12.
