Overview
The documentary program offers returning MPA camp graduates and new students with notable experience an opportunity to focus on the craft of documentary storytelling. In addition to studying the craft, students will receive hands-on experience in documentary production including conducting interviews, working with available lighting, creating effective b-roll, editing and post-production workflow.
Documentary Program Features
Non-Fiction Narrative
The non-fiction narrative course will focus on the development, drafting and revision of personal essays. Students will be introduced to the craft of creative non-fiction through in-class writing exercises and the close reading and discussion of published essays by a diverse range of authors. Topics explored include development of voice, story structure, the craft of revision, as well as various approaches to research. Some independent research and in-class writing will be expected. Students will workshop 1-2 full-length essays in class. This class is required for the documentary program and may be offered to creative writing students if space remains.

Audition Requirements
All applicants must submit:
- Personal essay detailing your interest in filmmaking and what inspired your application to Interlochen.
- 3-5 page writing sample of one of the following: critical essay, screenplay, short fiction.
Students new to MPA Program
- Sample video and written detail of role in the development and production of the piece submitted.
Returning MPA Students
- Sample video, screenplay, short fiction or photographs created since previous camp. Include written detail of role in the development and production of the piece submitted.
- One page proposal for original documentary idea that might take place on Interlochen campus.
