Overview
This course is an intensive two-week seminar that covers the fundamentals of audio recording. Students completing the program will have an understanding of the principles of sound and audio and will be capable of using sophisticated electronics to make a high quality recording. Instructors will bring real-world knowledge into the classroom to give students insights into the recording world, showing them how the music they listen to every day is actually recorded and produced.
Through a combination of lecture and hands-on work, the following topics will be covered:
- Principles of sound
- How to evaluate a recording
- Sound measuring devices
- Microphone design
- Microphone technique
- Control room environments
- Time domain, frequency domain, and amplitude domain processing
- Digital audio
- Recording systems and signal flow
- Recording studio consoles
- Roles in a recording session
- Careers in audio
- The recording business
- New audio formats
- Digital editing, PQ coding
Program Details:
Classes include lectures, sound-playback and discussions.
Hands-on demonstrations will allow students to utilize and explore sophisticated audio equipment.
A final recording project will give students an opportunity to apply what they have learned by recording a jazz, rock or other group to take home a sample of their work.
Prerequisite
Applicants must have a minimum of two years playing experience on their instrument and the ability to read music.
