The intermediate creative writing summer program for grades 6-9 provides students with a three-week immersion in the world poetry and fiction. With guidance from teachers who are professional writers, students develop a portfolio of revised poems and stories and learn how to give and receive constructive feedback to improve their writing. Small class sizes ensure that students receive individualized mentorship from their instructors. Students present their work at a reading at the end of the session.
The creative writing department is centrally located on Interlochen's scenic campus, in The Writing House, a sunny, comfortable building uniquely designed for the study and practice of writing.
Writing classes include guided writing assignments, reading assignments, discussion and critique as part of the daily curriculum.
The creative writing forum allows all intermediate writers a chance to work on a variety of projects with each of the creative writing department instructors.
Three additional electives enrich the students’ experience (view elective options).
Creative writing majors have the option of taking playwriting as one of their electives.
Note: Students will be provided with notebooks and pencils. Laptops are optional; students who bring laptops are responsible for their storage and security. Computers are to be used for writing purposes only and computer use outside of the classroom will be restricted to designated times and areas. Creative writers who bring a computer must provide their own USB drive to facilitate printing. iPads are not recommended as students will not have access to wireless printing.
