Liza Grossman is the founding Music Director of the Contemporary Youth Orchestra (est. 1995) and is Director of Orchestras at Kent State University. She has served on the conducting faculty at Interlochen Center for the Arts since 1999 and is the co-founder of the Interlochen Arts Camp Junior Advanced String Institute.
Grossman has conducted 20 world premiere concertos with Cleveland Orchestra members, national and local musicians. She has conducted over 100 orchestral world premieres, all with the composers present. She has collaborated with composers including Bernard Rands, Joan Tower, Robert Ward, Jaz Coleman, Dmitri Tymoczko, Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR), Mark Mothersbaugh and John Kennedy.
She has conducted world premiere orchestral rock performances with rock and popular artists including Graham Nash (CSNY), Ray Manzarek (DOORS), Pat Benatar, Mike Garson, Donnie Iris, STYX, Jon Anderson (YES) and Jefferson Starship.
She is the co-Executive Producer of 'State of Independence – Jon Anderson and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra' and 'Jefferson Starship and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra'. She has traveled with Styx as guest conductor for their performance with the Jacksonville Symphony (FLA).
She holds degrees in music performance and music education from Cleveland State University. Her graduate studies were continued at the University of Michigan. Grossman's conducting teachers include David Holland, Alexander Schneider, Marvin Rabin and Gerard Schwarz.

She is a guest conductor and clinician for orchestras and festivals around the country and a private violin and viola instructor. As a violist, Grossman has performed, recorded and toured with artists including Bernadette Peters, Kansas, Gerald LeVert, The Three Tenors and YES.
Grossman and CYO can be heard on the self released CD, 'IV: Four World Premiere Concertos', New Door Records, 'One With Everything; Styx and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra', seen on HDNet and PBS internationally with Styx and Jon Anderson. 'A Night with the Contemporary Youth Orchestra' featuring CYO with Styx, Jon Anderson and Jefferson Starship, was featured on HDNet and PBS nationally in 2012.
Grossman and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra are the recipients of awards including the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, the Northern Ohio Live Award of Achievement and the Sunshine Award from Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio.
