Kelly was born in Fargo, North Dakota in 1952. After a few months in Denver, he moved to a suburb of Chicago in 1960. He began playing violin and eventually became the concertmaster of his high school orchestra. He also began to play electric bass, which he continued to do into college. In 1972, he began to play string bass, focusing on jazz.
He moved to Chicago in 1976, from where he has continued to play nationally and internationally with some of the great players of today. Kelly has been fortunate in his career, and is very happy to be a part of the Interlochen community.
