About David

David Zerkel is Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Prior to his appointment at Michigan, he was Professor of Tuba and Euphonium for 20 years at the University of Georgia. His students have distinguished themselves by winning international and national competitions and attaining positions with professional performing organizations.

Zerkel has performed with many orchestras, including Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta, National, Baltimore, and the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra. He began his performing career as a member of the United States Army Field Band and The United States Army Band, both located in Washington, D.C.

Zerkel has performed as a featured soloist at many workshops, including the Falcone Festival, several International Conferences, and the United States Army Band Tuba Conference. His first solo CD was selected as the recipient of the inaugural ITEA Roger Bobo Award for Excellence in Recording and he was the inaugural recipient of the ITEA Excellence in Teaching Award.

Zerkel has served as President of the International Tuba Euphonium Association.

My primary goals in teaching are to help the student find their most beautiful sound on the instrument and to guide them toward their voice as a clear and compelling communicator.
