Institute Programs: Overview
The institute programs at Interlochen are one-week sessions that provide opportunities for focused study for high school students (grades 9-12).
While participating in Institute Programs, students will live in a cabin with 10 to 18 other artists. The cabins are rustic but comfortable. Counselors supervise each cabin and are usually current college students who are studying the arts.
Institute students eat at Stone Center in the middle of campus. There are a variety of meal choices for students including a hot main course, salad bar, deli bar and vegetarian options.
Because the Institutes occur before the regular camp season, participants do not wear uniforms and have limited opportunities and time for recreational activities.
Visual Arts Portfolio Institutes
The Portfolio Institutes provide exceptional opportunities for students to construct and refine a visual body of work under the guidance of a visual arts faculty drawn from around the country.
All instructors have extensive experience in portfolio development and will guide students through portfolio preparation for college art programs or for Interlochen Arts Academy.
Institutes are designed for students who are actively exploring further education in the visual arts and have already started to compile works. Activities will vary by institute and will provide numerous opportunities to add additional work to the student’s portfolio.
