Overview
This program features two string orchestras (intermediate and advanced) for musicians between the 3rd and 6th grades. Repertoire is carefully chosen based upon the educational needs of each orchestra. Because of the age of the musicians, campers have more flexibility to take non-music classes and explore other disciplines. Basic ensemble skills coupled with string pedagogy are stressed in rehearsals and sectionals. Students will participate in a final performance at the end of each two week session.
Program Details
This progam includes an organized warm-up for musicians to begin their day followed by a two-hour rehearsal. Sectionals, music theory and movement exercises are taught on a schedule that rotates daily and a String workshop devotes time to special topics such as sight reading, rhythmic reading, bowing techniques and additional rehearsal.
Two additional electives are available as well as private lessons. Due to the two-week length of the junior music programs, private lessons are not offered to students who are attending only one session. Private lessons are available for an additional fee to any junior student who is attending camp for at least four weeks.
Honors Recital Competition
Interlochen offers an Honors Recital competition for advanced junior instrumentalists. Winners of the competition will perform at a special Honors Recital scheduled at the end of each two-week session.
To audition for the Honors Recital, musicians must submit an audition DVD no later than May 7, 2010 (postmark date for all sessions). Those selected to perform at an honors recital will be notified in writing by June 11.
