Overview
The Organ Program at Interlochen offers organ students an intensive three-week immersion experience. The small, close-knit nature of the department enables daily interaction with faculty and colleagues, both formally and informally. Students practice on one of nine practice instruments located in the organ building or on the 50-rank Aeolian-Skinner located in Dendrinos Chapel and Recital Hall. Qualified students may play for the Sunday assembly, the nondenominational service held in Kresge auditorium, a 4,000 seat auditorium with a three to four second acoustic. Qualified students may also perform in one of the weekly organ recitals.
Program Details
Private organ lessons are given weekly with a dedicated practice time on the days opposite the lessons. Strudents also receive private piano lessons given weekly with a dedicated practice time on the days opposite the lessons. An organ master class includes studio class, meetings with guest artists, coached practicing and work in church service playing while a piano skills class helps students develop a strong technical foundation. One additional elective is also available.
Audition Requirements
- Record two solo works of contrasting style on a CD or DVD. There is no required repertoire for intermediate applicants but the audition should demonstrate the applicant's overall ability.
- Submit the audition and label the recording and its casing with the applicant's full name, presented repertoire and the program notation "Intermediate Organ."
Inexperienced organists with a strong piano background are encouraged to apply; admission eligibility will be determined on the combined merits of the piano and organ selections.
