Overview
The Vocal Arts and Operetta Program is an immersive learning experience for high school singers. Students will appear as part of an operetta production. They will have solo opportunities both on stage and in recital. Together, the vocal arts students form the World Youth Honors Choir and the core of the Interlochen Festival Choir. Vocal Arts students will perform four major concerts throughout the session, including at least one major work with an orchestra.
Program Details
The World Youth Honors Choir (view repertoire list, Adobe PDF format) gives students opportunities to hone their ensemble skills while also providing extensive performance experience singing a capella, with piano or a full orchestra. The operetta workshop meets daily to explore the arts of staging, movement, acting and singing. The workshop culminates in a full-length performance of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta.
Students will receive private voice lessons given once a week for all six weeks of the program. Lessons focus on solo repertoire and advanced vocal technique. Additional performance opportunities include the vocal honors recitals, the Concerto Competition and master classes. Students will participate in daily instruction and master classes covering such topics as sight-singing, music theory, diction, the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), movement, and staging. An additional elective (optional) piano class for voice majors is highly recommended.
