Overview

Students work with a team of experienced professionals and university instructors who will help students in all areas of preparation for college and professional theatre programs. Focus will be on the preparation of audition monologues and songs, developing movement and dance skills, identifying higher training programs to fit personal goals and experience levels.

Details

This program includes classes in: acting and dance techniques, vocal ensemble studio work and audition preparation.

Students will live in a cabin with 10 to 18 other artists. The cabins are rustic but comfortable. Counselors supervise each cabin and are usually current college students who are studying the arts and sometimes former campers.

Because the Institutes occur before the regular camp season, participants do not wear uniforms and do not have opportunities for structured recreational activities.

Audition/Portfolio Requirements

  • Two 16-bar excerpts from two different songs from standard musical theatre repertoire with piano accompaniment. One excerpt should be from an up-tempo song, and one should come from a ballad or slow song.
  • Prepare one monologue (from a published play) of your choice. No longer than three minutes.
  • Applicants with dance experience should include a one-minute sample of movement or dance representative of skill level (include pirouettes, jumps and any type of acrobatic movements).
  • Record the above requirements on a standard full-size VHS tape (US format) or DVD (preferred).
  • Submit the audition and label the recording and its casing with the applicant's full name, presented repertoire and the program notation "Musical Theatre Intensive."
