This program is open to students who will complete grades 9-12 during the 2009-10 school year.

Admission: 

Applicants who apply by February 1 will be notified of admission decisions no later than April 1. Late applicants will be notified on a rolling basis.

Overview

The Interlochen summer classical guitar program offers intensive training to the serious classical guitar student. Students are offered a full array of guitar classes, ensembles and personalized instruction.

Jazz guitarists are invited to apply for the High School Jazz Summer Program.

Program Details

Private lessons are given for one hour each week. Topics covered in the private lessons include repertoire, interpretation, technique and reading skills among others.

Guitar Technique Workshop is a daily one-hour class that emphasizes musical and technical development. Topics include developing scale playing, slurs, arpeggios, extensions /contractions, tremolo and rasgueado techniques. Also addressed are playing without tension, speed development and tone production.

Audition Requirements

  • Choose two representative solo works of contrasting styles, demonstrating tone, technical facility and interpretation.
  • Record two solo works of contrasting style on a CD or DVD.
  • Submit the audition and label the recording and its casing with the applicant's full name, the program notation "H.S. Classical Guitar" and presented repertoire.
