Visual Arts Intensives

Students in these three-week sessions participate in five hours of intensive course work and the visual arts studio seminar five days a week. Due to the focused nature of the visual arts intensives, students will not have an opportunity to take electives.

Advanced Drawing Overview

The advanced drawing intensive is for students with previous drawing experience and established skills. The program focuses exclusively on drawing materials and techniques. Students will explore composition, proportion, perspective and value while building their observational skills. They will also be introduced to contemporary art practice and ideas, and have the opportunity to create self-directed creative work.

Program Details

  • Drawing foundations and techniques, including graphite, ink, charcoal and conté
  • Approaches to drawing from observation through still lifes, perspective and portraiture
  • Visual arts studio seminar
  • Figure-drawing and the human form
  • Participation in the weekly figuredrawing studio is encouraged
  • Evening open studio tutorials twice a week

Prerequisite

A portfolio that shows established skill in drawing, particularly from observation.

This program requires an application and a portfolio. 1) Prepare the materials listed below. 2) Complete the online application. 3) Upload your portfolio materials to Slideroom at http://interlochen.slideroom.com.

Online applications are strongly encouraged, though students may also apply by mail.

Required Materials: 

 

Slideroom instructions: Please submit five image files, each 10MB maximum.

Prepare five images that represent the applicant's highest quality of work. Three pieces must be made from direct observation (drawn from life) and may be in any medium.

Note: applicants who submit a portfolio for the advanced drawing intensive program and wish to continue into the three-week advanced painting intensive program should follow the advanced painting portfolio guidelines. Students do not need to submit two separate portfolios.
